i24NEWS DESK | Israel’s has decided to take extra measures Wednesday to combat the coronavirus spread, with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu saying “we are dealing with a global pandemic.”

The Jewish state is to forbid events hosting 5,000 people and more and listed France, Switzerland, Spain, Germany and Austria as countries from which returning citizens will go into quarantine.

In a rare joint press conference, including Health Minister Yaakov Litzman and other health ministry officials, the Israeli premier said that the disease “may be the most dangerous of the last hundred years, but Israel’s situation is better than all other countries.
“We had to undertake extreme measures in order to slow down the infection rates in Israel and that’s what happened,” Netanyahu continued.
“We must stress the importance of personal hygiene, doing something that is against human nature — to avoid shaking hands,” he said. “I tell you, just avoid shaking hands, as I do.”
Israel had previously announced bans against east Asian nations such as China, South Korea, Thailand, Japan and Vietnam when spread of the novel coronavirus first began to make headlines in early February.
So far, at least 15 confirmed cases of the virus have been diagnosed in Israel.
Earlier Wednesday, the Health Ministry said that 1,000 Israelis may be ordered into forced isolation after a 15-year-old soccer fan diagnosed with the disease attended a crowded soccer match in Tel Aviv.
