THE RUNDOWN | Israel’s High Court has delayed a decision regarding the deportation of Human Rights Watch’s Israel/Palestine director Omar Shakir until after the Jewish new year, i24NEWS has learned.

Shakir has been battling the Israeli court system for 14 months after support for the boycott, divestment, and sanctions (BDS) movement surfaced on his social media account.

A law passed in 2017 allows Israeli security services to deport or bar entry to any foreign national that expresses public backing for the BDS movement.

Shakir’s lawyer argued that a decision should be delayed citing Israel’s recent election, adding that new officials could have a different perspective on the case.

Both Shakir and Human Rights Watch denied promoting a boycott of Israel, and accused the Jewish state of seeking to muzzle criticism.
